In light of todays news that Google will phase out support for IE6, I am very pleased to announce the i am root websites will no longer support this archaic web browser.Google is not the first major player in the web to halt support for Internet Explorer version 6. The online campaign ie6nomore, supported by more than 70 web firms, says that because the browser does not support modern web standards it restricts what developers can do and is “holding the web back”.
“The web has evolved in the last ten years, from simple text pages to rich, interactive applications including video and voice,” wrote Google’s Rajen Sheth in a blog post.
“Unfortunately, very old browsers cannot run many of these new features effectively.”
IE6 not only halts the progression of the web, but it is also very insecure and can be harmful to your computer or network when used to browse the web.
There is no excuse for the continuing use of IE6 – a browser which was launched in 2001 and has now been uperceded by two further releases of Internet Explorer. There are many alternatives available. I personally recommend Google’s own browser, Chrome. See links below for more information.
- Google Chrome
- Firefox
- Opera
- Safari
- and if you must use IE, make sure you have the latest version (currently IE8)!
